4 Easy Ways to Get Healthy for the New Year

Regardless of whether or not you make New Year’s resolutions, we could all stand to do something to make ourselves a little healthier. The good news is that you can make a few small, simple changes that can have a serious impact on your well-being. At Aten & Garofalo Dentistry, it is important to us that you feel healthy all year long. So check out these tips and give a few a try!

1. Give up those vices

We know this is easier said than done, but kicking bad habits is a huge part of getting healthy. For example, if any of the following is a part of your daily routine, you should consider a change:

  • Tobacco
  • Alcohol
  • Junk Food
  • Soda

We won’t act like we don’t have the occasional glass of wine or piece of candy. Those are things that should be consumed in moderation. Tobacco, though? That’s something you should never use. It’s bad for your lungs, your teeth, your gums and your overall health.

2. Take care of your mouth

There is a reason we tell you to brush and floss every day, and it goes beyond simply keeping your teeth looking pretty. The truth is that your mouth is a gateway to the rest of your body! Germs can enter your bloodstream through gums that are in bad shape, cavities and more. So take care of your teeth and make sure you see your dentist twice this year.

3. Walk every day

Not everyone can make it to the gym for an hour or two every day. However, we should all be able to squeeze in 30 minutes of walking a day. You can take the dog out for a stroll or park further away from the office. Even if you have to split up those 30 minutes into a few different walks, your heart and body will be better for it.

4. Eat your veggies

Vegetables are one of the most nutrient-rich foods you can consume, so do it! According to ChooseMyPlate.gov, the amount of veggies you need every day will vary based on your age and weight. Most adults should eat between 2 and 3 cups a day. Find ways to sneak them in, like adding extra carrots to that salad or packing some celery and peppers for a midday snack. Not only will this give you vitamins, but it will also help fill you up so you don’t reach for unhealthy food.
